We were commissioned by Triakon Engineering to design a new gymnasium for their client Exxaro, who are providing the facility as a social responsibility contribution to the Thabo Mbeki community, about 70km from the town of Lephalale. The new gym is a key part of a larger project we are involved in to refurbish the existing community hall complex.
Our design acknowledges the existing hall and mimics its curved roof to maintain aesthetic continuity throughout the complex. The new gym is positioned on the north east side of the site facing the parking area to its west. We designed fins on the west facade to 'scoop' in north light, reduce west sun into the main hall as well as avoid monotony on the facade. Clerestory windows along both east and west facades aid in cross ventilation and increase natural light into the main hall.
The material palette we selected, informed by the existing community hall, was chosen for its durability and low maintenance qualities which are key for the remote location of the building. Construction of this new gym commenced in September 2014 with Practical Completion achieved in September 2015.
