We were appointed to provide architectural services for the refurbishment of the Thabo Mbeki Community Hall by Triakon Engineering. The refurbishment was commissioned by Exxaro, who are providing the facility as a social responsibility contribution to the Thabo Mbeki community.
The buildings entrance was re-designed and accentuated with an entrance canopy and a signage wall to give the hall a sense of identity. We elected to plaster and paint sections of the hall to link it aesthetically to the proposed gym on its west. We designed a landscaping layout including a playground for the community kids who previously were not catered for.
Our first exercise was to determine the suitability of the existing building for the needs of the community, it became evident that a separate gym facility was required. The existing hall was structurally in decent condition with the most damage caused by leaking roof.
The interior of the building included upgrades to the ablutions, kitchen, stage, main hall along with all doors and windows. Construction of the refurbishment commenced in the 3rd quarter of 2014 and was concluded in September 2015.
