The Gauteng Department of Education put out a proposal call for mobile classrooms to be distributed in remote rural areas. In response to this call, our client, Iyomo Consulting (Pty) Ltd, requested a simple and practical design proposal for the conversion of dis-used cargo shipping containers into mobile classrooms.
Our design concept is very straight forward and proposes 5 shipping containers for each rural location, arranged to create two classrooms and one ablutions facility. We proposed an additional roof which serves two functions, forming a canopy over the entrances as well providing an added insulation barrier for the classrooms. As these schools are in rural remote areas, we utilised simple passive design principles, namely cross ventilation and insulation of interiors. We proposed renewable energy through the use of photo-voltaic cells as a sustainable low operational cost energy source.
